Shadowgate made a lasting impression on me, and I am determined now that I have found it again that I will indeed defeat it. The Geek in me demands justice. The player-controlled protagonist of Faxanadu is an unidentified wanderer. He has no name, though the Japanese version allows the player to choose one. The game begins when he approaches Eolis, his hometown, after an absence to find it in disrepair and virtually abandoned. He meets with the Elven king, who urges him to set forth and restore the realm’s prosperity by defeating a being known as The Evil One.

As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Elves and Dwarves lived in harmony among the World tree until The Evil One emerged from a fallen meteorite. The Evil One then transformed the Dwarves into monsters against their will and set them against the Elves. The Dwarf King, Grieve, swallowed his magical sword before he was transformed, hiding it in his own body to prevent The Evil One from acquiring it. It is only with this sword that The Evil One can be destroyed.

The game takes place across three ascending worlds made to resemble the World Tree’s sections: one covered in a fungus-like substance (the roots), one enveloped by poison mist (the interior of the trunk), and one that resembles the tree’s branches.

As a geek when someone mentions RPG’s there are a few things that come to mind. The chances are however that Diablo is one of the first things to pop into your head.  So when I finally got my hands on Torchlight I wasn’t surprised at the look or feel of the game. To say the hack and slash click frenzy was reminiscent of Diablo might be considered an understatement of the most extreme kind. Diablo II like game mechanics and the  atmoshpere and simplicity of the original experience of Diablo mixed with a pleasant and classic graphical style all mesh for simple, fun and streamlined experience with Torchlight. Calling something  clone is ussually a negative factor but the Diablo’esque fell comes from the Team, a group of former Blizzard North members working with Runic Games and doing a damned good job.

With a small footprint and very reasonable spec requirements Torchlight is a unique game and at it’s bargain pricing (Steam 19.95 AUD) it’s a hard gem to look over.

With solid RPG game mechanics hidden under simple yet charming graphics you’d be forgiven for expecting a strong story line filled with lavish quests and extensive exploration. The real game is all about building your character. With a brief and linear plot line just wrapping around an exceptionally fun dungeon hack ‘n’ slash, grind ‘n’ horde game. You start with some wet behind the ear’s RPG Archetype his pet and a quest, not to save the city of Ember (As the story line would have you believe) but rather to find the most awesome and intimidating armoury with which to slay the biggest and baddest monsters from the deepest and darkest places under the mountain. I can’t think of anything more suited to an hour block of my time after a long day’s work.

Some people might get a little chalky about the shallow storyline  but lets be honest, action RPG’s are the Geek’s Barbie Doll. We don’t care if Grimnak ‘The Immense’ has saved hundreds of orphaned children and built houses for widowed wives (Of course you might care, in that case might I suggest a game from Bethesda !) I want to know what colour armour he’s wearing and how many DPS can he push while wielding dual swords of Uber Flamyness +12 with sockets. Did I mention sockets? more of that Diablo’esque coming to the fore. A side note is character building and the lack of a forced skill structure. Your three archetypes are standard, Warrior, Mage and Rogue however there is no forced system. With a little creativity and some carefully game play your Rogue can DPS like any warrior and your Mage will happily wear any armour you throw at it. I guess it’s just one more way the slick and simple structure of this game shines through for a fun experience.

The retro feel graphics, offer a slick gaming experience for most users and it even boast’s a net book mode. I have yet to try this but i’d love to hear from someone who has. Still retro or not the effects are great with spell’s firing from all angles while Boss’s hurl splitting arc’s of lightning and Ghoul’s radiate Poison clouds of death. Simple allows a great overall feel since the machine simply pushes through the most dramatic of battles losing nothing to stuttering or overly complex layers of particles fighting for your attention. Style and class all the way.

Of course lacking a real story would usually hurt a games re playability, in this case it’s simply not true. Torchlight work’s of that age old system of addiction. It took me about 2 hours to have a personal chest fool of goodies, it wasn’t enough. Torchlight’s true strength lies in the truly random nature of the dungeons. Of course your likely to notice the set pieces that are put together, traps become obvious after you’ve set of a few (Especially in hardcore mode, dieing is always more painful when it is permanent.) however the sheer number of unique weapons and monsters you will face is astounding. I found my dog was carting my gear back to the sellers so often he could hardly assist me in the fight. Running through the game is a brief campaign, however truly relishing the hunt for greatness and glory is a time honoured tradition for RPG players of any genre. This game keeps you coming back for more, more monster’s, more loot and plenty fun.

Torchlight is a great title well worth adding to any RPG collection, the new take on a old classic system is something that might just help hold us all over while we wait for Diablo III. My only real peave with this game was the lack of a co-op mode, it’s almost criminal. Still with the modding tools released we might see something in the works soon. Thank you Runic games for giving me just a little taste of the glory day’s of gaming.

It’s been an interesting year for me, and I can only guess the same goes for most of you.

Tragedy and Joy, political intrigue the Global Financial Crisis, the Election of America’s first African American President (Yes I know he’s not 100% African American but the fact that is an issue speaks volumes about the American populace and the important step this was for America as a  whole.)

The sad and truly unwholesome death of ‘the King of Pop’ Michael Jackson (When i say unwholesome I wish to refer to the vultures and ass clowns whom simply would not let the poor man rest in piece. Simply put have some respect for the dead you ass clowns.)

On 23 November 2009, the first proton–proton collisions were recorded, at the injection energy of 450 GeV per particle.

Of course you may wish to know what that means. Well considering it was going to destroy the world. Of course this was technically the second firing of the Large Hadron Collider but for the purposes of… I actually have no idea of why they called it the first firing. There where technical difficulties the first time round however it was fired. Perhaps the first time did destroy the world, sucking us all into an improbable black hole where our insignificant consciousness were unable to comprehend the dark and sacred knowledge passed to us through our unholy use of science. This life were all leading is simply an oubliette of our own consciousness struggling to protect what little sanity is left to us. Of course since the world doesn’t seem to have blown up we can all prepare for the inevitable self destruction of both our race and this planet.

Might I also bring to light 2009 is the year that the Australian public finally realized the people in charge of censorship in Australia… to put it politely, the limp 4 week old stick of celery that has started to go moldy because it’s stuck behind the almost empty bottle of sauce in the fridge has more understanding of the current social landscape than any of the wrinkly old men that get paid sit and watch porn/horror/other all day so they can then tell us that we can’t (because its to disturbing for our fragile little minds ?) This issue is somewhat close to home since I am of course, Australian.

So let’s begin with a little information.

Left 4 Dead 2 was refused classification in Australia by the Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC). It failed to gain a MA15+ rating, the highest possible rating for video games, thus preventing the sale of the game within the country.[8] In its report, the OFLC cited the reason for refusing classification as “The game contains violence that is high in impact and is therefore unsuitable for persons aged under 18 to play.”[61] However, a small number of members of the OFLC board believed the game could merit the MA15+ rating which was used to publish the first Left 4 Dead. It was expected that changes could be made to the game, as had to be done with Fallout 3, to allow the game to be classified as MA15+ and thus sold in Australia.[62] Both Lombardi and Newell were “surprised” by the classification refusal.[63][64] Valve appealed the OFLC’s decision about a week after being notified of the ruling, comparing the sequel to its predecessor, which had been classified as MA15+, and the mature ratings the sequel had received from similar rating organizations around the world.[65] However, as the appeal process, expected to end on October 22, was close to the planned release date, Valve submitted a modified version of the game for classification addressing the concerns the OFLC has stated.[64] This version, which no longer contained images of “decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies”, was classified as MA15+ by the OFLC, thus allowing for the game’s release in Australia, though Valve and Electronic Arts still hoped to have their preferred, unmodified version classified by the OFLC for release.[66] The appeal of the decision to deny classification to the unedited version of the game was conducted by the independent Classification Review Board, and resulted in the previous ruling to deny classification being sustained. The Classification Review Board cited “insufficient delineation between the depiction of zombie characters and the human figures” as one of the key factors in its classification refusal.[67]

Left 4 Dead 2′s classification refusal, as well as for other recent games such as Fallout 3 and Aliens vs. Predator, has reignited debate over the current prohibition of sale and exhibition of video games for mature audiences.[68] On November 14, 2009, approximately 170 people participated in the “Epic Zombie Lurch” protest in Sydney, Australia, organised by local video gamers in protest of the lack of an R18+ rating for video games in Australia.[69] In mid-December 2009, the Australian government sought public opinion on the adult classification rating for video games, despite statements by South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson believing the issue to only affect a minority of the country’s citizens.[70]

So in all honesty fair enough. The game is pretty intense violence wise and yeah the zombies do look kinda like humans. I have played both censored and non-censored versions and will state that although the non censored version is gory and very violent the game is simply not worth buying with the censorship in place. So I’m a little peeved we don’t have an R18+ rating. The man responsible seems to think the law’s he keeps in place only effect a minority. I would like to point out that Hitler only targeted a minority. So Attorney General Michael Atkinson is obviously a Nazi? Just putting it out there people, logic is fortunately undeniable.

We move to exhibit B. Modern Warfare 2. What the Attorney General Michael Atkinson (and his Cabal of Gestapo Censorship buddies) is trying to say is one of these two things … (BTW I believe it’s choice a. Nobody is truly stupid enough to believe choice b. Are they ?)

a. I am senile, please put me out to pasture I am no longer of any use to the Australian public.

b. It is ok to portray violence towards the following people if you’re protagonist is a terrorist or a serviceman *; American and British Servicemen; Unnarmed Russian Civilians; Terrorists or Ethnicities that are stereotyped as Terrorists | however we can’t do the same to zombies it might give the kiddies the wrong idea.

*Terrorists include but are not limited to. Russian Ethnicity, Middle Eastern Ethnicity, African Ethnicities, (Did I mention this guy might be KKK ?)

There really is no point in sugar coating the arrogance or ignorance of these people. This man believes I am unable to choose for myself and yet will make decisions based on some inconsistent and stereotyped handbook that doesn’t belong in my generation, let alone my children’s generation. however on a side note, Modern Warfare 2 is a great game, the single player campaign is harsh and gritty giving all the feel of an intense modern war movie with all the dramatic action and intense firefights you could want in a FPS game. The scene where you are forced to be an under cover terrorist is simply horrific and you get an intense feel for the injustice of todays political intrigues and war. It may be fiction but it hits close to home.

Just for kick’s I thought I might list games that hit the shelves during 09, I don’t own them all (There was quite a list of games for 2009.) However I do try my best.

First of all, Mass Effect 2 is gritier, darker (in both theme and lighting) and ultimately larger then ME, with the promise of sprawling worlds and lots of content actually being delivered. I picked up the SE boxset down at EB Games, and the product description lists the Hard Drive usage at between 12-25 GB. That’s around the size of World of Warcraft and Aion (put together if it tops out at 25 gb). So it looks like they’ve delivered on the promise of a sprawling universe.

The second thing that makes my day is ME2 actually gives you the opportunity to carry on your ME character into the gleaming new world that is ME2. Now on my PC, I’ve played ME over and over again, every class in both male and female I’ve leveled to 60. So, if I can take my lvl 60′s and own up in ME2 I’m champing at the bit.

But where is the real revolutionary aspect of this game you ask. Well simply put the story line revolves around how you talk and treat your party members, they will mutiny if your an ass to them, and not only that but you can KILL off characters that piss you off. But remember in at least one of the story lines, Shepard dies, in fact most of the story lines end don’t have happy endings. ME2 has pitched your adventure as a suicide mission, and only along one gleaming possibility do you survive, intact and not a head case. ME2 has literally thrown down the gauntlet, the combat might or might not be easy, but it brings back the thrill that I used to get playing The Witcher, in which even the tiniest decision had a larger consequence. ME2 looks like it’s going to provide me alot of replayability. Which is something very few non-mmo games  have these days.

Onto actual combat and mechanics. ME2 has an improved physics engine, with one of your party (of course it’s the Krogan) being a charge-aholic. Biotic powers have been redone with at least 1 new power added, your team mates AI has been improved, with a psychotic Biotic and a Krogan who head butts everything in site at range.

Ok, now you’ve got the general idea, why should you pre-order. Well if you do, you get access to special ingame equipment. A Desolator type weapon that fires mini-black holes, and the Terminus armour, a very very sweet looking peice of combat gear. in fact I’m going to give you a little taste of it right now.

Once you’ve finished looking at that, you’ll have access to some of the myriad of trailers out there. I recommend looking at the Garrus Gameplay trailer.

Unfortunately I haven’t finished the game yes and until I do i can’t give a proper Review but at this stage I’m happy to give it a 4.5 stabbity’s out of 5.
